Colleagues at Kratos were saddened to hear of the death of Professor David Briggs on the 9th January 2018. David established the first industrial surface analysis lab in the UK at ICI and was the driving force for many developments in applying XPS and static SIMS for materials characterisation. In 1979 he founded the journal Surface and Interface Analysis. David was appointed Professor of Surface Chemical Analysis at the University of Nottingham in 2000 until his retirement in 2016. During this period he evaluated and purchased a Kratos AXIS Ultra initiating a strong collaboration between the University of Nottingham and Kratos Analytical which continues today.
For many his name is known as an editor of the books that became the default reference for may of us in surface analysis: 'Practical Surface Analysis vols 1&2' and the revised, updated version 'Surface Analysis by Auger and XPS' and from his time at ICI, 'XPS of Polymers Database'. We all know them as Briggs & Seah, Briggs & Grant and Beamson & Briggs respectively.
For those interested John Vickerman and Ian Fletcher have written an eloquent obituary detailing Dave's considerable contribution to XPS and SIMS which can be read here.
Colleagues at Kratos have made a donation to St Richards Hospice, Worcester in memory of a friend, colleague and pioneer of applied surface analysis.
