Applications Specialist - Surface Analysis

Increasing growth in demand for our X-ray photoelectron spectrometers has lead to the vacancy for an Applications Specialist within the Surface Analysis group in our Manchester, UK headquarters.  The role is a technical sales role in a team primarily focused on sales and marketing of our surface analysis products.  It is expected that some international travel to customer sites and attendance at national and international meetings will be undertaken.

The successful candidate will be responsible for;

  • Instrument demonstrations to prospective customers.
  • customer sample analysis & preparation of analysis reports.
  • Customer training in the operation and application of XPS and optional analysis techniques on newly installed instruments at the customer site.
  • Preparation of application notes & supporting marketing material.
  • Initiation and developments of collaborations to develop the technique and its applications.
  • Attendance and presentations at international conferences
  • Interface with the product development group to ensure customer requirements are integrated into future products.

The ideal applicant will have a PhD or equivalent experience in surface analysis or materials characterisation.  Experience in relevant surface analysis techniques is essential allowing the applicant to contribute immeadiately to the applications group.  Hands-on experience with scientific instrumentation including ultra high vacuum and XPS specifically would be desirable.  It is essential that the applicant has excellent personal and presentation skills.  The role will require some international travel for duration of 1 or 2 weeks at a time.  Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK.

A Vacancy has arisen within the Customer Support Group for an engineer to maintain surface analysis instruments world wide.

The applicant should be willing to travel extensively, periods of travel would normally range from 1 week, in the case of Support visits, to 4/5 weeks, in the case of installations.

Job responsibilities:
• Customer site installations of upgrades, delivery of warranty work, maintenance visits.
• Testing of repaired units before returning to customers.
• Providing customer technical support.
• Providing customer training.
• Problem and failure reporting, support of continuous improvement initiatives
• Completion of business records in an accurate and timely manner.

• Degree level qualification in Electronics, Physics (with experience and background in scientific instrumentation) or Mechanical Engineering.

• Knowledge of techniques such as X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and the ability to demonstrate a background in scientific instrumentation would be desirable.

Apprentice Software Tester

We are looking for an Apprentice Software Tester. The role offers training in partnership with Estio Training and the opportunity to progress into a permanent position.

Training to be provided:

The Estio Training programme gives the opportunity to get hands on experience in the IT industry whilst still employed in a real paid job.

Learners will receive five weeks of intensive training. Whilst in the workplace, apprentices will also receive continual coaching, help and guidance from a dedicated Skills Development Coach.

This apprenticeship will provide a Level 4 Software Tester Standard with training in areas such as:

• Functional skills, Maths L2 and English L2

• Software Tester Methodologies

Some of these modules will include an option to take an examination in order to receive a professional certificate.

Job requirements:

5 GCSEs grades A*-C/9-4 or equivalent (including English and Maths)

Personal skills:

We primarily use Microsoft technologies any knowledge of any Programming language would be beneficial, as would any use of Jira. An interest in working as part of a team to build modern software for scientific and medical use.

Apprentices will be given the opportunity to build and develop throughout the programme. Day to Day they will be working on assignments across multiple projects / roles and tasks.

Agile Based Testing contributing to Sprint planning sessions and daily stand ups

Working within Development and Test Team
Understanding how to generate Test Data
Identifying test requirements from Specifications
Writing of Test Cases
Executing of Test Cases
Logging of Bugs and Defect Tracking
Ability to execute exploratory testing
Assist in reviewing of Documentation
